Election for Rajya Sabha Dy Chairperson to be held today
The election to the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman will see a direct contest between NDA’s candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh and opposition nominee B K Hariprasad. Harivansh filed his nomination paper as the NDA candidate for the post of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Besides BJP, several other leaders of Akali Dal and Shiv Sena were also present on the occasion.
NDA is confident of comfortably winning the election scheduled to held on Thursday and has expressed its hope of getting support from all the parties.
Harivansh Narayan Singh’s rival in the elections and opposition nominee, Congress MP Hariprasad also filed his nomination papers for the post of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
With the expected support of more than half the members of the Upper House, the ruling NDA’s Harivansh seems to have an edge over the opposition’s B K Hariprasad.
Current strength of the Rajya Sabha is 244 and support of 123 members will be needed for a win. BJP has 73 members in Upper House. While, BJP’s allies JD(U), Shiv Sena, Akali Dal have 6, 3, 3 MPs respectively.
Besides, it expects to get the support of 13 MPs from AIADMK, nine MPs of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), 6 from TRS and two from YSR Congress Party.
Besides, BJP also expects to get the support from some other independent and nominated members to reach the magic figure of 123.
On the other hand, Congress has 50 MPs in Rajya Sabha. Given the circumstances, UPA total figure could cross 100 votes. While, there are many other smaller parties who have kept their cards close to thier chest.
What who will win the polls for the post of deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha , will only be known after polls on Thursday.
