Vice President delivers 1st Atal Behari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture at IIMC

Vice President M Venkaih Naidu said that Media has an important role in promoting participatory democracy through enhanced voter turn out which in turn broad bases the foundation of democratic governance.

Delivering first Atal Behari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said that Free media is the Cornerstone of Democracy.

India, being the world’s largest democracy, the role of media becomes all the more important.

Described as the fourth pillar of democracy, media can actually be a force multiplier to sustain democracy.

The Vice President added that Participatory Democracy is only possible through active participation of citizens.

The function was also attended by Prasar Bharati Chairperson Dr A Suryaprakash, who underlined the importance of media’s crucial role in an election year.

He urged the fourth estate to remain balanced and non-partisan, in keeping with the guidelines laid down by Prasar Bharati.
