Heavy rains lash North, West, North-East India

The flood situation across Imphal Valley in Manipur continued to remain grim with heavy showers leading to waterlogging in Imphal East and Thoubal districts on Tuesday.
Repairing of the damaged banks of Imphal and Kongba rivers is underway. Overflowing waters of the Nambul river have inundated many roads, throwing vehicular traffic out of gear.
Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed for relief and rescue operations after the government sought their assistance. Hundreds of affected people have taken shelter in the relief camps.
In Assam, heavy rains have increased water level in rivers flooding many areas. More than 3.5 lakh people have been affected by floodwaters in 13 districts including Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, Cachar, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Karimganj, Sonitpur, Darrang, Hojai, Majuli, Barpeta and Nagaon districts.

Over 700 villages are under water and almost 15,000 hectares of crop area have been damaged so far.

Currently, river Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark in Jorhat and Tejpur. State Disaster Response Force personnel are engaged in relief and rescue operations in many areas.

Meanwhile, normal life has been severely affected by torrential rains in Gujarat’s Tonkara taluka of Morbi district, which received very heavy showers increasing water levels in many check dams.

Rains that have been lashing the state since the onset of the monsoon have caused the water level in many dams to swell. State Disaster Management Authority has been placed on alert to deal with any emergency.

Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in some parts of the state in the next two days, while light to moderate showers are likely to continue for the next five days in many parts.

Met also forecasts heavy rains in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.
