57 journalists murdered worldwide in 2016

Paris: Reporters Without Borders -the press freedom group said today that atleast  57 journalists have been killed around the world in 2016 while doing their job.

It has said that19 were killed in Syria alone. Atleast 10 Journalists killed  in Afghanistan followed nine in Mexico and five in Iraq.

The journalist killed were locally-based.

While it was fewer than the 67 killed in 2015, the group put the decrease down to the fact that many journalists have fled countries that became too dangerous specially Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen, and Burundi and Afghanistan .

It also said that eight media workers and nine bloggers have also been killed this year.

According to source there were seven including three women, killed in a suicide attack in January on a minibus used by privately-owned Tolo TV and the Taliban claimed responsibility.

However,RSF (Reporters Sans Frontieres) urged incoming UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special representative for the protection of journalists.
