Scuffle in in Rajya Sabha over wheat prices
New Delhi: Wheat price became the latest crossroads between the government and the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha which result the house to adjourn.
Sitaram Yechury ,CPI(M) leader was the first to raise the issue, stressing that the decision will anti-farmer” and not in national interest and benefit multinational companies.
CPI(M) leader accused the government of taking a “deshdrohi nirnay.”
He said the move could be in anticipation of “food riots” in the country following the move to demonetize higher value currency.
Though the government placed on record that there is no shortfall of wheat in the country, the duty waiver is in anticipation of a possible rise in wheat prices, the CPI(M) leader said farmers are selling their produce at half the price.
The SP, BSPand JD(U) also criticized the move, with Sharad Yadav pointing out that globally wheat prices are on the decline.
