The situation in Jammu and Kashmir continues to improve every day. Most areas of the valley are restriction-free. In Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is believed to have briefed him about the security situation in the state.
On another front, Union home minister Amit Shah took stock of the situation and was briefed about the steps taken to maintain peace along border areas as well as in the Valley.
During the two-hour long meeting, also attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba among others, the home minister was given a detailed presentation on the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly along the International Border and the Line of Control.
The meeting came amidst report that around 230 terrorists were brought to terror launch pads by Pakistan to push them into Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant General K J S Dhillon, General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps, which looks after the Kashmir Valley, had recently said there have been infiltration attempts from across the border.
Restrictions were first imposed across Kashmir on 5th August when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcate the state into two Union territories. The restrictions were lifted in phases from many parts of the valley as the situation improved with the passage of time.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has agreed to entertain a petition filed by the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference challenging President’s Rule imposed in the state and abrogation of provisions of Article 370, which gave special status to the state.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices S A Bobde and S A Nazeer tagged the petition filed along with petitions which have been referred to a five-judge Constitution bench for examining the legal validity of the Presidential order on abrogation of Article 370 from the state. However, the bench declined to entertain other fresh petitions on the issue of scrapping of Article 370.
The Supreme Court has also allowed Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit four districts — Srinagar, Jammu, Baramulla, Anantnag — to meet people but said he cannot hold any political rally. It also allowed CPI(M) leader Mohd Yusuf Tarigami to go back to his home state Jammu and Kashmir. The ailing leader was on September 9 shifted from Srinagar to AIIMS for treatment.
The apex Court asked the Centre to make all endeavours to restore normalcy in Kashmir as soon as possible. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices S A Bobde and S A Nazeer was told by the Centre that all Kashmir-based newspapers were running and the government had been offering all kinds of assistance.
It also said that TV channels like Doordarshan and others private ones along with FM networks are working in the state. The bench asked Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, to put details of these steps taken on an affidavit.
