The Conference will reflect on the power shift in the global politics and its implications for India and its extended neighbourhood. The role of regional organizations (such as the ASEAN and SAARC) in promoting and maintaining peace in the region will be an important theme in the Conference. Similarly, Japan has scaled up its engagement with South and Southeast Asia. There is also a need to evaluate the US Policy of Rebalance to Asia, and have a better understanding of the growing presence of China in the Indian Ocean region. In addition, the Conference will also witness substantive discussions on the security developments in the Indian Ocean region, and in the Pacific. Specifically, the deliberations will also reflect on the South China Sea Dispute and the growing cooperative frameworks centred on the Bay of Bengal. The possibilities of expanding cooperation in the realm of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) will also feature in the conversations.
